Stainless Steel Mirror Finishing for Precision Components: From Ra 0.6um to 8K

Aug 26,2026

What "mirror finish" means in CNC machining

A mirror finish is a surface so smooth and reflective it acts like a mirror. In precision manufacturing we quantify it with surface roughness Ra — the average deviation of the surface profile. A standard CNC-machined face might sit around Ra 3.2 µm, while a true mirror finish reaches Ra ≤ 0.05 µm. At LusterControl we have spent 15 years pushing stainless-steel surfaces from Ra 0.6 µm down to an 8K mirror (≈ Ra 0.2 µm), using 55 machines across our 2,000 m² Dongguan plant.

Experience: 500,000 precision parts per month, 35 CNC lathes, 15 four-/five-axis CNC centers, and 5 turn-mill units — mirror finishing is a daily production process, not a one-off experiment.

Surface roughness explained: Ra 0.6µm vs 8K (Ra 0.2µm)

The "K" grade (6K, 8K, 12K) describes reflectivity, while Ra describes measured roughness. Industry references place 8K mirror stainless around Ra 0.05–0.1 µm, and our production target bands are:

FinishTypical Ra (µm)Use
No.4 satin0.4–0.8Appliance trims, elevator panels
BA bright annealed0.05–0.2Hygienic, decorative parts
Ra 0.6镜面 (our standard)≤ 0.6Medical, food, optical components
8K mirror≈ 0.2Luxury, high-reflectivity parts

Sources: surface-finish references from Kongfang Metal and MachineMFG confirm these Ra bands.

The stainless-steel mirror-finishing process, step by step

A mirror finish cannot be "buffed on" at the end — it is built from the first cut. Our process:

1. Precision machining: tight initial tolerances and clean tool paths reduce deep marks. 2. Progressive grinding: 80 → 400 → 1000 grit removes scratches. 3. Compound polishing: cloth wheels with white/green rouge build reflectivity. 4. Electropolishing / passivation: for uniform corrosion resistance on medical and food parts.

Equipment that makes mirror finishing repeatable

Consistency comes from controlled machines, not hand skill alone. Our 15 four- and five-axis CNC centers hold geometry while turn-mill units complete complex bodies in one setup, protecting flatness and edges that polishing would otherwise round off.

Why stainless steel is the hardest — and most rewarding — to polish

Stainless work-hardens and can show "orange peel" if overheated. We manage pressure, direction, and cooling at every stage, and passivate after mechanical polishing to restore the chromium-oxide layer. The payoff: fewer microscopic pits, better cleanability, and slower corrosion.

Industries that depend on mirror-finished parts

Medical & food: hygienic, easy-to-clean surfaces (ISO 13485 environment). New energy: corrosion-resistant connectors and base plates. Optics & automotive: low-friction, high-reflectivity components.

Quality control: from 96-hour salt spray to CMM inspection

Every batch is traceable. We run 96-hour salt-spray testing, CMM dimensional inspection, and gloss/roughness checks, backed by ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certification, with IATF 16949 in application. First articles ship in as little as 7 days with 0 MOQ.

Trust: supply-chain partner to De'Longhi, Donlim, and Breville for appliance hardware; documented inspection data ships with the order.

How to request a mirror-finish quote

Frequently asked questions

Can polishing change my tolerances? Yes — it removes material, so we plan a polishing allowance on tight features and mask edges when needed.

Is 8K better than Ra 0.6? 8K is more reflective; Ra 0.6 is our standard production mirror that already meets most medical and food needs. Pick by function, not just looks.

Do you certify the finish? We provide roughness reports and, where required, salt-spray and CMM data per batch.
